Software Defined Networking
Software-defined networking (SDN) is an approach to networking in which control is decoupled from the physical infrastructure and given to a software application called a controller, allowing network administrators to support a network fabric across multi-vendor equipment. It is without an iota of doubt an emerging paradigm in computer networking that allows a logically centralized software program to control the behavior of an entire network. Logically centralized network control makes it possible for operators to specify more complex tasks that involve integrating many disjoint network functions (e.g., security, resource control, prioritization) into a single control framework, allowing network operators to create more sophisticated policies, and making network configurations easier to configure, manage, troubleshoot, and debug.

Separating a network's control logic from the underlying physical routers and switches that forward traffic allows network operators to write high-level control programs that specify the behavior of an entire network, in contrast to conventional networks, whereby network operators must codify functionality in terms of low-level device configuration.

Impact on Business
SDNs will allow networking hardware to be made malleable and remotely manageable to an unprecedented degree by software, making their dent in the enterprise.

  • Service provisioning speed and agility: Setting up networks in an SDN can be as easy as creating VM instances, and the way SDNs can be set up is a far better complement to VMs than plain old physical networks.

    without being hamstrung by their consequences.
  • Better and more granular security: VMs have made network security a headache and a half. SDNs can provide the kind of fine-grained security for apps, endpoints and BYOD devices that a conventional hard-wired network can’t.
  • Efficiency and lower operating expenses: SDNs are being evaluated as a money-saving methodology with lower opex costs due to improved network management efficiency.
  • Virtual network services, lowered capex: Enterprises can lower their capex --both by making better use of what enterprises already have, and by lessening dependencies on proprietary hardware and dedicated appliances.
Outlook
SDN is sometimes referred to as the Appliance killer because it allows network engineers to support a switching fabric across multi-vendor hardware and application-specific integrated circuits.
